Line. Shape. Form. Space. Color. Texture. The ordinary. These are the elements of design. They are the book on your shelf, the shirt you are wearing, and the poster you hung in your room as a teenager. The artist considers all of these elements when creating a piece in any medium, such as fabric, graphic design, painting, sculpture, or ceramic.
Exploring the different elements of design through various mediums helped me further utilize them to the best of my ability. I was able to learn color and texture by designing costumes for several SBU Theatre productions. The knowledge of shape and form comes from sculpture and ceramics, while drawing and painting taught me about line and space. All of these elements can be seen in every piece of art made—whether they are the emphasis of the piece or not—and, therefore, come together in my graphic design work.
